It's a "thread rating." I believe that it has to do with the length of the thread. At some point we can decide how much of this cutesy stuff we want to preserve.
It's similar to the user ranking that appears above your picture. The number of green dots is related to the total number of messages you've posted to the forum. There is a special reward if and when somebody hit's a six!

No, the gold stars are a user rating of the topic. You can click on the stars to rate the topic. It averages everyone's ratings.

| That's what beta testing is all about. That particular "feature" is enabled by default. I just need to find where I go to disable it. I don't find it that useful, either ... |

The little green "dots" indicate how active you've been in the forums.
