On February 16, Doug Gerlach decided to sell TALX and replace it with EXBD.  Doug's SSG and a discussion about EXBD are in the EXBD Forum.

Doug's portfolio will be updated, and the transactions will be completed at the closing prices on February 16.

Look for an update of all five portfolios at the end of February.

I'm glad Doug's choice of TALX alerted me to buy it, also.   And, I also sold, after the tremendous runup when their buyout was announced.   Gene

Doug,

I ran an SSG on EXBD (which I had never even heard of) and it looked very impressive. Do you beleive the huge drop on Feb 7 was a knee-jerk reaction by the market to news that was not substantially so bad? Maybe even that's what made this a buy opportunity?

I found a list of stocks in three portfolios and see posts about the update, but I cannot find where I saw the lists earlier. Help.

Message updated on 4/4/2007 to use 3/30/07 prices and to correct a small error with one dividend in Doug Gerlach's portfolio.

We've ended the first quarter of 2007, so it's time for an update to our "25 Top Stock Picks for 2007 and Beyond" competition.

News:
  • On 3/28 Doug Gerlach sold HITK and replaced it with MINI.  Look for Douglas' comments in the HITK and MINI forums
  • Look for comments from our stock pickers in the forums represented by their stocks.
Results - Here are the results to date in tabular form.  An Excel spreadsheet and a PDF file with the results are  attached to this message.

Can you explain, please, how you got the cost basis for MINI in Doug's portfolio?

You show a loss of 79.01 on HITK, so that leaves $920.99 to purchase MINI. You said earlier you you were using commissions of $9.99.

So, the cost basis of MINI should be $920.99 less a $9.99 purchase commission which is $911. However, you show the basis as $927.61 (more than the $920.99 available from the sale of HITK).

Also, the number of MINI shares (34.329) is not consistent with a cost basis of either $927.61 or $911 and a 3/28 closing price of 26.73.

Oh, I see. The purchase of MINI was made using the 3/28 closing price but included in the purchase price was the $6.62 EXBD dividend that wasn't paid until two days later (3/30). I guess that's OK, since the 3/28 purchase doesn't settle until *3* business days after 3/28 (4/2).

Jim,

I'm certainly appreciative of your checking my work. You caught a mistake. The EXBD dividend should be reinvesting in EXBD! I'll update the spreadsheet and report, and I'll use the 3/30 closing prices.

I certainly got lucky with TALX, I'll admit -- but I will note that my second best performing pick, AMMD, has still done better than anyone else's best pick so far!

(Of course, I could come to eat my words since the competition is still young -- so I have to take my opportunity to trash talk my fellow stockpickers while I've got the chance!)

Doug I thought we'd keep the contest going until I'm ahead, then call it quits?

I was looking for a September update for the 25 Top Stock Picks for 2007. I've done a search, but the only information I find is other questions to find the updates? Where am I looking wrong? I would assume it would be on this thread. Would it be on another discussion thread?

The second quarter results are right here in The Classroom.  The topic title is "Subject: 25 Stocks to Own in 2007: July 1 Update"

If you click on the word "Topics" you will see them in alphabetical order, and 2 is close to the beginning of the alphabet!

Two of the portfolios show ticker symbol  'LLL' as Level 3 Communicaitons.  LLL is L-3 Communications Holdings; Level 3 Communications is symbol LVLT.  The data found in Take Stock for LLL is inconsistent with the S & P  data.  It shows an EPS of $875.54 in 1999; S & P shows an EPS of  $.87 for that year.  Was the data for Take Stock incorrectly input?  It causes the results to be incalculable.  My SSG and the Take Stock Analysis are vastly different because of this.

Hi Vicky,

Joe would have to clarify in regard to whether they are holding LLL v. LVLT.

We have corrected the 1999 EPS data for LLL.

Thanks for raising these points, please let us know other questions/suggestions/errors, any time!
