Mark Robertson is the founder of ManifestInvesting.com.  Manifest Investing features an e-newsletter focusing on successful long-term investing including web-based investment research and features for stock and fund screening.  Other tools provide resources for portfolio design and management.  Mark formerly served as senior contributing editor for Better Investing magazine and has appeared on National Public Radio, CNBC, and ABC to discuss long-term investing.  He has worked with Smart Money, Barron’s, Money magazine and The Motley Fool, and published features in the Chicago Tribune and a number of local publications.

Mark says ...

Happy New Year!

I’d like to first give my best regards to the other participants in this stock selection contest.  It is my hope that all of you will outperform the market while settling for second place to me.

But it’s more than a contest, it’s a demonstration of some time-honored principles and a reminder that the core fundamentals matter.  My selections will be consistent with the lessons I’ve learned from George Nicholson and bolstered with the successful long-term investing concepts suggested by Benjamin Graham (the father of Value Investing) and David L. Babson (considered by many to be one of the fathers of Growth Investing.)  At Manifest Investing, we implement these lessons by deriving two major characteristics for any investments (yes, including funds.)  They are the projected annual return (PAR) and quality rating (a ranking from 0-to-100, with >65 being an excellent company).

My first selection is a company that I’ve not only invested in but featured many times, Linear Technology (LLTC).  I believe it was Ralph Seger who first made me aware of the company – as well as EMC Corp and a couple of other late-1990s leaders.  Click here to see Mark's analysis of Linear Technology.

Good luck, gentlemen!

Leave it to Mark to pour a little sugar in the gas tank of our "25 Stocks to Own" competition.  It's hard to call continue to call this "25 Stocks" when we've got a duplication.  But, Mark has gone us one better: Mark's fifth and final pick is NOT a stock.

Mark's final pick is an ETF, specifically Vanguard Growth ETF (Ticker = VUG).  Mark has posted in explanation as to why this makes sense in our Manifest Investing Forum for your reading pleasure.
