I am finding it quite difficult to find messages on the forum. When I log on I go to Community and select Unread messages. I look to see the most recently posted messages, identified by date. If someone replies to a particular subject area, I am required to scan down over messages I have read to find the latest message. Is there any way to avoid this?
I was going to post this message to a subject theme started by Ira regarding the difficulty negotating this message board. I was not able to find that original message. This is just an example of how difficult it is to work with this system.

I prefer using "Active Topics" to catch up. You can set the time frame for activity, too.
I also find it helpful to display the most recent messages first. That avoids scrolling in topics that have quite a few messages.

I'm sure it would be useful if you would tell Lowell how to do that. I was going to tell him, as I have set that option and find it works pretty well, with the "Active Topics" link, to give me the view I prefer.
However, I can't remember how I did it. I remember being presented with the option and choosing it, but don't remember where I was at the time or how I got there, and now I can't find it.

Sure!
If you click on "My Profile" you'll find the option there.
Also, if you are reading a topic, you'll also find a drop-down box at the top right of the messages. You can change from "Newest First" to "Oldest First."
When viewing the forum and looking at the list of topics, clicking at the top of a column changes the sort order. You can sort by date, who posted, etc. |

I have several questions:
1) While I see I can select newest first when I read a message, I would like to be able to have that be the default as opposed to having to change it from oldest to newest each time I enter Stock Central. Is there a way to do this?
2) I have been using "not read" to select the messages to read. After selecting the first one I would like to be able to directly skip to the next one. I have been using the back button to get there but am hoping there is a way to do it with one click. The "Next" button on the lower right takes you to a new subject and not the next unread message.
3) You mentioned you used "active" in reading your mail. Could you explain what "active" means and how this differs from unread? Or perhaps the purpose of "active"?
4) What is the purpose of the "Design" button on the lower left corner when replying?
As you can see I am still learning to find my way around Stock Central.
I would add I think the Top 25 stock selections is a great way to encourage interest and discussion on what I am sure will be some stocks of interest.

If you click "My Profile" and then "Edit Profile" you'll find that this is one of the available preferences. There are others, including on that will "jump" to the first unread message in a thread. Presumably that is most useful if you are reading "oldest first."

Unfortunately, this doesn't work as you'd like. The "Active Topics" and "Unread Messages" choices select across all forums. The "next" link is next in the forum. Perhaps a future forum software upgrade will provide next unread.
In the meantime, you can always click the Unread or Active Topics link at the top of the page. That takes you back to the list. In the case of unread messages, it will be less the message that you just read.

Unread means ... unread, and lists all messages (and their topics) that you've not read.
Active Topics are those that have a new message within the time frame specified. When you start, the default is active since your last visit to the forum. You can use a drop down list to adjust she "since when" date and time.
Active Topics is designed to show you what's happened "recently." Unread can include unread since the beginning of time.
4) What is the purpose of the "Design" button on the lower left corner when replying?
The two choices are Design and HTML. Normally, you should be in the design mode, so the editor is WYSIWIG. If you switch to HTML, you can write your message directly in HTML format.
(We will be upgrading the editor in the near future. When we do, that choice will disappear and be replaced by a "Source" button. The source button will switch you to HTML mode.
As you can see I am still learning to find my way around Stock Central.
We're all beginners at one level or another!

Having seen all of the picks, I think we'll have a great competition, not to mention a great list of stocks from which to build a diversified portfolio. |

Well, not exactly. You must next click on "Edit Profile." Before I posted that message DID click "My Profile." I looked at the top (non-edit) profile view and said to myself, "I thought 'Preferences' would be here but I don't see it," and went no further.

Presumably you meant to propose the reverse, change "Oldest First" to "Newest First." But I don't want the newest, I want the first "Unread." That's what I'm using and it works for me (there might be six more messages following the first "Unread" and I don't want to come in at the end). I must have seen the "Preferences" when I added my avatar and checked the "Unread" option then.

Am I correct in assuming it is desired to have discussions and questions regarding the Top 25 Stock Picks? I thought this was the case but noticed you submitted the stocks thus far as opposed to directly by the gurus.

Yes, you're absolutely right that we'd like some discussion. Ralph, Danny, Ellis, Mark and Doug have voluteered to put their selections out in public, so I think that is is up to "us" to scrutinize their picks as carefully as we can. With our questions and their answers, I hope that we'll all learn how these good folks arrived at their selections.
Please use the various ticker forums to discuss picks. In those few instances where a couple of people picked the same company, it should be fun to compare their judgements.
And also feel free to upload your own judgements if you think that they are wrong!
The reason that I'm posting these is for consistency ... and I'll also be summarizing and reporting periodically on these portfolios.

| One thought, to personalize the subscriber welcome page, is to insert the subscriber name in place of Welcome Stockcentral subscriber. In other words replace the SC subcriber with members names if possible. |
