Greetings,

I just joined SC & purchased TK5.  Did not have any previous versions (including demos) installed.

Here's what I did:

Logged on to my XP admin account, downloaded & installed TK5.

    Installation appeared to complete OK.

My problem: I cannot start TK5.  No error messages.  Task Manager shows "Toolkit5Server.exe" is running.

My computer has been running fine.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

John

John:

What happens if you select TK5 and click on the “Switch To” button in your Task Manager?

Hi John,

If Ellis's suggestion does not work for you, I have another.  i have seen this happen with TK5 before, where the Toolkit5Server.exe is running in Taskmanager, but TK5 is not showing.  Inside Taskmanager, select Toolkit5Server.exe and choose End Task.  Then, try opening the program again.  This (or a reboot) has always worked for me.

Hi Ellis,

First let me say how much I've enjoyed reading your book Take Stock.   You've done an outstanding job explaining "sensible" investing princibles in clear and easy to understand terms!

Will you be publishing an update in the future?

I've been looking forward to getting started with TK5 software and applying the principles you've written about.

I did try your suggestion below.  However, it did not work.

I see a very quick flash of the "splash screen", then nothing.  No TK5 in the TASKBAR.

When I examine TaskManager I see:

            Applications Tab:    Investor's Toolkit          Running

        Processes Tab:        Toolkit5Server.exe

Nothing happens when I do a "Switch To" on Investor's Toolkit

I did an "End Task" on Toolkit5Server.exe, then restarted Investor's Toolkit 5 from the desktop.  Still no luck.

I should say that the everyday account I'm logged onto is not an XP Administrator account.

Should that matter?

Thanks for your assistance.

John

So I discovered that TK5 launches as long as I log in as Administrator.

I really don't like using the admin account for anything other than system maintenance.

Is there a fix for this?

John:

Thanks for the kind words. Such is the “coin of the realm” for me: that someone feels that my book has benefited them somehow.

WRT the TK5 problem, if you installed TK5 while logged in as administrator, it probably won’t come up if you log in under any other ID. That’s the nature of the login profile, as I understand it. Try logging in under another profile and installing TK5 again. You may have to uninstall it and re-install it.

Actually, I’m a real dunce compared to Irving Roth, when it comes to Toolkit support. If you don’t get any satisfaction with what we’ve suggested here, try calling ICLUBcentral support. You’ll probably get Irving (or you can ask for him). Satisfaction guaranteed!

Toolkit is a "legacy" application (being designed long before Windows XP, Toolkit is not security aware). As far as I know, you can not run Toolkit using a "Limited" account on Windows XP. Is that what you're trying to do?

If you have Windows XP Home, I believe you have no option but to run Toolkit using an Admin account.

If you have Windows XP Professional, there is another choice. If you know how to edit group membership on Windows XP, you can add your Windows XP user name to the "Power Users" group. As I recall, that's what I did so I could run Toolkit on Windows XP without using an Admin account. "Power Users" is only a bit more restrictive than "Admin", but it's at least a little better than using an Admin account.

If someone knows of a better way to run Toolkit on Windows XP, I'd sure like to know about it.
