I too am looking at EMC, however my SSG is in the HOLD range. I've used similar growth rates, but used a much lower high P/E ratio of 26.5. I notice MFI, VL and S&P show forward P/E's of 22.9 to 26.0. I do think the storage tech area is a good one right now with companies looking for incresed security while dealing while dealing with compliance issues. EMC receives more than 50% of its revenue from software & services. So with hardware, software and services, EMC has some good growth potential.

I looked at your SSG and I don't think it looks so good, but then again, I'm no expert.    Earnings are down 17% from a year ago, and the PERT-A graph looks horrible.   What am I missing?

I don't understand how EMC can have a poor 2Q with pre-tax earnings down 25%, according to VL, while its stock price increases by 28% between reports. My 10-28 SSG was very similar to Karen’s and I used Future EPS growth of 11.3% along with Projected Hi/Lo PEs of 29.6/21.8 (from 2005) which are the lowest in the last 5 years as EMC’s PEs are coming down. I got a 4.1 UD and a 15.9% TR, and my Forecast Hi Price of $26.30 was less than VL’s estimated $20-30. Morningstar has had several very positive articles/reports about EMC this year and it was also the Stock To Study in the April 2006 issue of Better Investing magazine. ps: I stumbled on this discussion by accident... is there an overview page of current posts so I don't have to scan all (7000??) of the individual stock forums? I also can't seem to get seperate paragraphs and my text after several edits still runs together in a jumble.

Click on Active Topics at the top of the page (when viewing "all forums") to get topics that have been recently active.  When you do, you'll find a drop-down box that helps you define what is "recent."  That defaults to your most recent visit.

Cleaning up navigation and making things easier to find is one of the items on the drawing board, and we'll have some improvements (I hope) in the next week or so.

As for edting, make sure that you click on "Design" at the bottom of the editing box.  If you've clicked on "HTML" you'll have to include HTML tags.

I had the same questions re. EMC. I'm seriously considering taking a position in the company. Here's how I've rationalized the disconnect between poor EPS and stock price increase. 1. They had revenue gains of 18% 2. They gained market share from HPQ - they now have 21% of the storage mkt - up from 20% 3. They stand to benefit in '07 from recent acquisitions. 4. They've completed a 4% reduction in work force 5. LBO candidate (no reason to buy but perhaps explains some of the price move.) 6. Will fully support next generation MSFT products (Vista) 7. Competitors don't provide all parts of a total data solution. 8. On 9/18 completed acquisition of RSA-the leader in protecting & managing online identities. 9. VL shows inventories up substantially, however they seem to be building to meet the future - the majority of inventory consists of new systems. 10. In my opinion EMC will grow from an overall increase in storage capacity needs i.e. expanded use of e-mail (new gov't regs requiring e-mail storage), increased video and music storage capacity. 11. Since the market is forward looking, I'm thinking the mkt likes the potential. I do see this as a turnaround company. Please let me know your thoughts, I'm struggling with a decision on this company. p.s. MFI has a PAR of 18.2 and Q rating of 59.7.

Hi Karen:

(1) I own EMC having bought it eons ago when it was a rising star (not, as now, a worry). I still believe that data storage will be a growth industry for a long, long time, maybe forever, and that prospective purchasers should evaluate and compare other companies in the same industry to help make their decisions. See, for example: Morningstar’s 10-18-06 report (When it comes to storage, EMC is second to none) and its 11-15-06 report (Why We Like Storage-Management Software Stocks).

(2) JoeC says we have to know HTML (I don't) if we want to format our posts with readable and intelligent spacing. Plain text can be used at I-C-L, Yahoo, and Better Investing Community with better results than here and which I think encourages more thoughtful commentary.

I just found the "design" button. So disregard #2 above.

The "Quick Reply" box, always below the last post, automatically formats our posts with HTML. Another accidentral find. However, no font choice, no bold-italic-underline, no funny faces.

Where is the "design" button and what does it do?

>>EMC receives more than 50% of its revenue from software & services. So with hardware, software and services, EMC has some good growth >> potential.

Most of these companies have a tough time generating real service revenue. Their main interest is to use services to sell hardware. Their customers for a moment do not believe that EMC services will recommend HPQ in special circumstances. So services revenue if breakeven, they are lucky.

>>9. VL shows inventories up substantially, however they seem to be building to meet the future - the majority of inventory consists of new systems.

Not a good sign. IMHO. If systems are new, smart management will usually line up customers for pre-selling. If inventory is building up, not a good sign.

I have put up Karen's SSG here:

This is a test to see if this works. On the 'Home' screen - click on your name, upper right Then 'Manage Profile' Scroll down to 'Bio' in the windows screen lower left click on 'design' rather than 'html'

Never mind Armin, it didn't work. Apparently that is for the Bio only. I'll use the 'quick reply' section. Thanks

It would help if you explained your reasons.  Even better would be to post and discuss your SSG judgments.
