Danny Matthews is the "amateur" in our competition. This is not to say, however, that Danny doesn't know his way around stock analysis!
Danny's credentials include:
- President of BetterIvesting's Northern Nevada Chapter,
- member of
BetterInvesting's NIA Advisory board, and
- member of the Sierra
Investment Club.
Danny has this to say about his picks:
For this portfolio I have
chosen stocks that I plan to hold for the length of the contest. One year
isn’t really a horizon where I would buy a stock just to sell it twelve
months later. Warren buffet has said “if you don’t plan to
own a stock for ten years you shouldn’t own it for ten minutes.”
That is why I am picking large cap, best of breed stocks. There is one exception
is Lifecell, which I have personally owned for about 5 years. It is
my best growth stock over those five years and hope it will continue.
So ... there you have it. Danny's initial pick is Lifecell (LIFC). You can see Danny's SSG data for LIFC in the LIFC Forum. Feel free to comment on Danny's selection, or offer your own (alternative) analysis.

Joe first of all I want to update my status as far as a resume.
I am no longer President of the NNV Chapter after serving in that capacity for four years. Before that I was education director and made many of the class presentations, two of which are now available in the BetterInvesting toolbox file. The REIT PPT was awarded the first prize at the BetterInvesting National Convention a few years back. I am still the chapter contact for the region.
I have also resigned my position on the NIA board because of scheduling difficulties. I am however a member of the ten year old Sierra Investment Club. I have served as Pres. VP and Treasurer during that time.
I had my Health, Life, and registered Representative licenses with New York Life and Primerica up until I retired from my full time job with the State this past year. |

Sure ... but let's get to the important stuff ... you are one of the "Fighting Illini," right?

| True, born and bred in the great State of IL! Hopefully Mark and I will agree on more than the Illini during this experiment! Being in Northern NV I am rooting for the 15th ranked (coaches poll) Wolfpack. |

Danny,
Have you rounded the shares (or are you not buying fractional shares)?
If you've rounded, my math shows you having 13 shares of XOM and 19 of BAC (the dashboard shows 14 XOM and 18 BAC).

| Jim I took the day's price Jan2, and bought as close to $1000 dollars worth, (rounded). My broker, JoeC, did the actual purchases which I believe are going to be published at some point. |

The rules JoeC stated were "$1000 of each stock will be "purchased" on 1/1/2007 at the 12/31/2006 closing price."
Of course it's not possible to do that, since neither 1/1/2007 nor 12/31/2006 were trading days. I assumed the contest would be based on 12/29/2006 closing prices (the last trading day of 2006). |

Danny actually "owns" fractional shares worth $1000, purchased at the 12/31/06 closing price. As Jim notes, the closing price for 2006 is actually the closing price on 12/29, as that was the last trading day of the year.
All five portfolios will be posted after the final pick is revealed next Friday. |
