The Newbie Program is a special feature of InvestEd 2007, and you won't see a program like it anywhere else!
Marv Kohn and his team (Dana Garoutte, Herb Barnett, Mary Ann Davis, Shanna Rendon, John Tonsager, Kathy Tegtmeier, and Zinc Zeenkov) have put together a one and half day program that is designed to introduce long-term fundamental investing and computer-based tools to those who may or may not have a background in any of those areas.
Over the years we've never tried to define Newbie. In fact, it's intentionally quite vague. You can be new to investing, new to using computers, or new to "our" style of investing to qualify. In fact, there is no way to qualify, other than to sign up for the program. People with even moderate experience have found the program useful. Many times, spouses or young adult children of long time practitioners of our art have been convinced to attend. They all report having a wonderful experience.
The Newbie program begins with a general overview of investing and then jumps into stock selection, based on fundamental analysis. Software tools are introduced, and the program participants end their first day with a two and a half hour supervised session in the Computer Lab. The second half day provides more education that focuses on judgment, how to research companies and how to go about building a stock portfolio. Program participants will have Sunday afternoon free to attend seminars from the regular program.
Even if you aren't participating in the Newbie program this year, there's always next time! |
